The course aims to introduce the student to the topic of cultural heritage legislation. Students will acquire awareness of the extent of protection in Italy, with particular reference to cultural heritage (movable and immovable), through a path that outlines the culture of protection and the goals achieved. The course will be organized through lectures, seminars and guided tours. In parallel with the lessons and seminars, students will be asked to develop an exercise on the process of identifying and defining the heritage to be protected, conserved and safeguarded.
Course Prerequisites
It is required of all attending and non-attending students, a basic culture and knowledge, at least in broad terms, of the main historical-literary events, in order to place the covered topics in its chronological context. Moreover, as interdisciplinary subject with a significant legal component, an open approach and a minimal predisposition to the legal aspects that are essential for dealing with matters are desirable.

Assessment Methods
Oral interview aimed at verifying knowledge, understanding and critical reading skills of the topics developed in the course also through the bibliography. During the interview students will illustrate the activity developed during the exercise.

The bibliographic and legislative texts, in order to have the most up-to-date ones, will be indicated at the beginning of the course.

The program provides: - presentation of the program of the course and its objectives. - historical-cultural introduction of the reasons that have brought over the centuries the need to set up a specific legislation on cultural heritage - a brief historical excursus on the development of legislation from the Italy's pre-unification States to the latest laws - analysis of the Code of Cultural Heritage, with particular reference to the articles dealing with the fundamental concepts of protection, conservation, use, promotion, management, use and circulation of assets - explanation of the structure of the Ministry of Culture particularly considering the recent reorganization - description of references of the Code of Cultural Heritage to other sources: Italian Constitution and Civil Code, recent measures and updates
