Acquire the necessary competence to deal with eighteenth-nineteenth century German texts, in prose and poetry, written in the Gothic alphabet (Frakturschrift) and with archaic orthographic and/or grammatical features. At the end of the course, students will be able to read with reasonable fluency (with the help of a bilingual German-Italian dictionary) any text written in the Gothic (Germanic) alphabet and with archaic features, as well as poems from the end of the 18th century, even from archaic formal, grammatical or lexical features.
Course Prerequisites
To have good grammatical skills of Italian language. Have passed the German language exam 1. It may be useful to have good English and Latin language skills.
Teaching Methods
Traditional frontal lessons and exercises on printed texts from various eras. Use of multimedia equipment. Numerous exercises always aimed at reading only accompany the entire course.
Assessment Methods
Written test consisting of an Italian translation of a short printed text in nineteenth-century prose (in Gothic characters) and a brief nineteenth-century poem (in Gothic characters). Questionnaire (with questions in Italian to be answered in Italian) on a large text in modern German (selective reading test), using a bilingual paper dictionary. Duration of the test: 4 hours. Evaluation in thirtieths.

Artemio Focher, "Leggere in tedesco", Hoepli, Milano 2017 (and subsequent reprints), and photocopies with seventeenth-nineteenth century texts of various kinds written in Gothic style. On Kiro there are exam tests from previous years for a final assessment of learning.

Advanced reading course in German (36 hours, to be held in the third quarter) aimed at acquiring the necessary skills to deal with eighteenth-nineteenth century texts written in the Gothic alphabet, with archaic spelling and/or grammatical features, as well as linguistically demanding texts such as poetic, lieder, diaristic and libretto texts. Where necessary, topics in Germanic philology will be mentioned with the sole purpose of facilitating the recognition and therefore the understanding and memorization of the German lexicon. Non-attending students do not have a different program from attending students: the objective for all is to be able to read prose and poetry texts written in the Gothic (Germanic) alphabet and with archaic formal, lexical or grammatical features.
