Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student will know the different notations with which the medieval polyphonic repertoire has been transmitted from the twelfth up to the first decades of the fifteenth century, and will be aware of the main historical-critical issues that such notations raise and of the philological and performative issues involved in their interpretation / translation into modern notation.

Course Prerequisites

General nowledge of the history of medieval music, modality and counterpoint. General notions of musical philology.

Teaching Methods

Lectures about the main historical, codicological and philological questions of the examined notations; exercises of transcription into modern notations.

Assessment Methods

Written transcription from the notations discussed during the course; oral interview to verify the knowledge of the bibliography and the topics analysed during the course.

Contents

The course is mainly devoted to the repertoire of the clausulae of the Gothic polyphony and to the notation of the different genres of secular fourteenth-century polyphony.
