Course Objectives

The learning objectives of this course contribute to the development of the professional skills required in the pharmaceutical field. The main objective of the course is to provide the student with knowledge related to hot topics in medicinal chemistry, such as emerging drug classes and recent advances for drug classes already used in therapy. At the end of the course Students have to: i) know the recent advances in the medicinal chemistry field, ii) be able to present the concepts acquired synthetically, critically and effectively, by using the appropriate terminology of the medicinal chemistry field.

Course Prerequisites

To successfully attend the course, it is essential that students possess solid basic and advanced knowledge in general, inorganic and organic chemistry, good knowledge of fundamental biochemical concepts as well as of the main drug classes studied during the Medicinal and Toxicological Chemistry 1 and 2 courses. Specifically, students must be able to understand and apply the principles of organic chemistry related to the structure, properties, and reactions of organic compounds, with particular attention to the main functional groups, their stability, and reactivity. An in-depth understanding of biochemical processes and the interactions between drugs and biological targets is crucial, as it provides the necessary context for exploring the aspects covered in the course.

Teaching Methods

The course employs a variety of integrated teaching methods to achieve the learning objectives and ensure that students acquire the necessary competencies. The course mainly includes interactive lessons focused on case studies (scientific paper reading and discussion). Frontal lessons (PowerPoint presentations that will be available for students on Kiro UniPV multimedia platform) will also be given. Arial 12, double spacing will be used for slides preparation. For students with specific needs, who cannot attend teaching activities in person and who have applied for Inclusive Teaching Modality, adequate teaching material will be available for fruitful independent study. If necessary, self-learning can be supported by tutoring or supplementary teaching activities (i.e. dedicated meetings that could also be online) with time flexibility depending on needs.

Assessment Methods

Student performance is assessed in the final examination. It will consist of an oral exam focused on the discussion of a scientific paper or review. Students have to present and discuss the topic covered by the paper synthetically and effectively, using the appropriate terminology of the medicinal chemistry field. Test evaluation will be performed by the 0-30 scale. Appropriate examination methods are provided for students who fall into the categories of Specific Learning Disorders and Special Educational Needs

Texts

Study texts furnished by the teacher are available on Kiro platform
