The students must learn the concept of ionizing radiation and the corresponding quantities; he/she must also learn the basic concepts related to the radiation biological effects and the ICRP recommendations, as well as the main medica applications of ionizing radiations

Contents
Concept of ionizing radiation, with mention of radiation interaction with matter.
Main quantities: absorbed dose, equivalent dose, effective dose, LET and RBE.
Natural and artificial radioactivity, with focus medical applications (both in diagnostics and therapy).
Main aspects of the biological effects of ionizing radiation, from the sub-cellular and cellular level to the effects on the whole organism.
Contamination types. ICRP, its recommendations and dose limits.
Basic radiation protection in different medical activities.
