The course aims at studying the reasons and the instruments of government intervention in the economy. The drawbacks related to this government intervention will be underlined by analyzing (i) the main public spending programs which characterize the Italian economic system; (ii) the way in which government actually operates when it makes decisions about the economy; (iii) the role of the fiscal policy; and (iv) the public debt. At the end of the course, students will be able to answer questions such as: when should the government intervene in the economy?; how might the government intervene?; what is the effect of those interventions on economic outcomes?; why do governments choose to intervene in the way they do?
