Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student has an in-depth and direct knowledge of current historiographical sources and trends related to the different thematic and chronological areas of modern history. He knows how to identify the contribution that this study can make to understanding the present time.

Course Prerequisites

Ability to understand, analyze and synthesize a complex argumentative text; basic knowledge of general geography.

Teaching Methods

The course includes 36 hours of lectures and 6 hours of exercises to deepen some of the topics covered in the lessons. The lessons will benefit from the support of PowerPoint presentations available on the KIRO platform after the exhibition of each thematic unit for a limited time. Participation in visits or seminars is considered an integral part of the teaching activity of the course

Assessment Methods

FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS. The exam will consist of an oral interview. During the exam, the in-depth knowledge of the problems covered in each of the texts essential for the completeness of the program will be evaluated; the ability to recognise, in each text, the sources used and the historiographical reconstruction; the expressive mastery and the use of a specific language. The lack of knowledge of one of the two texts scheduled will cause a negative evaluation. Gaps in the knowledge of the texts in the program, poor ability to recognise sources and historiographical reconstruction, inappropriate language will imply an evaluation not exceeding enough. Mostly mechanical and/or mnemonic knowledge, limited synthesis and analysis skills, correct language, but not always appropriate will provide for a discreet evaluation. Full knowledge of the texts, good synthesis and analysis skills, fully valid and appropriate language will allow a good to excellent evaluation. FOR NON-ATTENDENT STUDENTS. The exam will be divided into a written test (questions with open and closed answers) where knowledge of the three texts in the program will be examined (two mandatory + the one of your choice). Students are invited to agree in time with the teacher by email on the choice of readings.

Contents

The course aims to form a critical awareness in the acquisition and use of bibliography, in the research and enhancement of historical sources, through an expanded look at the European continent. The genesis and evolution of European civilisation in the modern age will be analysed through the perspective of the history of France, one of the great monarchies that have most determined its fate. From Francis I of Valois to Louis XVI of Bourbon, all successive sovereigns have shaped court life and the kingdom's policies in their image, expanding their influence far beyond national borders. The theme of sovereignty, the centralisation of power and cultural policy, addressed in its theoretical and symbolic declinations, will be central, precisely in view of the exemplarity offered by the figure of Louis XIV. The general picture of the French culture and society of the "Grand siècle", allows us to grasp, on the one hand, some specificities of French civilisation, and, on the other, some fundamental links between thought movements, political-social, linguistic-literary and artistic phenomena that defined the formation of a taste and an idea of culture, basic to the construction of modern French and European.
