Obiettivi Formativi

The course aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge about the acquisition of English as a second / foreign language (SLA) and today's language of international communication. A clear understanding of the main processes and ourcomes in English SLA will be developed, together with a thorough grasp of the main methodological tools for its study.
The course also provides the basic knowledge about teaching English within an acquisitional and sociolinguistic perspective.
At the end of the course, students will be able to critically discuss various issues in English language acquisition and English language teaching while addressing applied linguistics problems.

Prerequisiti

Students should have a written and spoken competence in English corresponding to the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). They are expected to have a good understanding of the foundations of General Linguistics. They are also expected to have a good descriptive knowledge of the English language (i.e. phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexis, pragmatics, textuality, sociolinguistic use)

Metodi didattici

The teaching is divided into lessons and seminars and draws on the collaboration of a tutor.
During lectures, students will be encouraged to take active participation in class discussion.
The second part the course will include seminars by attending students (those attending at least 70% of the classes),in groups on
the applications of second language acquisition research to L2 English language teaching. Presentations will draw on the chapters in Cook (2016) -see reading list. Presentations are an integral part of the syllabus for attending students, who will be assisted by an experienced student tutor providing support for the activities in class.

Non-attending students are provided with additional reading material to study for the exam.

Verifica Apprendimento

Attending students will be assessed through a final oral examination on the course contents (50% of the final score) and on their communicative skills in English (20% of final score). The classroom presentation represents 30% of the final mark.

Non attending students will be assessed on the contents of the reading material (70% of the total score) and their ability to communicate in English (30% of the total score).

Contenuti

L2 English in the contemporary world. A focus on informal learning and use

The course offers an overview of the key notions of research on the acquisition of English as a second language, including interlanguage, accuracy orders and developmental sequences, informal acquisition versus formal language learning, English as a Lingua Franca, and the internal vs. external variables in L2 development ( e.g. L 1 influence; language universals; learning contexts). Special emphasis will be set on the spatial factor in language learning and on language input - i.e. the language data learners obtain through various types of exposure to the L2 - and its relationship with output or language production. The course will cover the main input types in naturalistic, multimedial and multilingual/multicultural contexts where English is used- e.g. native / non-native speakers’ interactions, intercultural communication, media input. The resulting sociolinguistic and acquisitional outcomes will be discussed with special emphasis on incidental and informal language learning by examining the results of a national reseach project on informal language learning through the media.
