Syllabus

Course Objectives

Development of the students’ knowledge of the historical evolution of the Spanish language, with a focus on phonetic, morphological, syntactic and lexical phenomena, together with the instruments useful for their analysis.

Course Prerequisites

Command of language equal to that implied by the attainment of the exam in Lingua Spagnola I (9 CFU).

Teaching Methods

Taught classes (not excluding the students’ participation) in Spanish, divided between the definition of the theoretical framework and the analysis of the studied phenomena through the comment of a series of representative literary texts belonging to the indicated historical period.

Assessment Methods

A written examination in Spanish, which will last 2:30 hours and will consist of two open questions related to the themes and topics of the course and of the bibliography and the analysis of one of the texts examined in class. The following evaluation criteria will be adopted: knowledge of the course’s themes, topics and bibliography; clarity in the exposition of the linguistic concepts acquired, also by means of the use of examples; practical application of the acquired knowledge in the analysis of the proposed literary fragment; command of language.

1. R. Lapesa, Historia de la lengua española, Madrid, Gredos, 1981 (or subsequent reprints), pp. 1-351. 2. A selection of texts to be analysed during the course (anthology available on Kiro).

Contents

Study of the diachronic development of the Spanish language, from its origins to the Siglo de Oro (XVI-XVII centuries).

Non-attending students are invited to contact the professor and will add an additional handout (available on Kiro) to the study of the adopted bibliography; their written examination will last 2:30 h, but will be readjusted on the basis of the aforementioned additions to the bibliography.
