Reading, dating, recording a latin inscription and publishing criteria of text will be taught during the lessons. A whole comprehension of every aspect shown by epigraphies (historical and palaeographical ones) will be achieved during the course, thanks to guided transcriptions and analysis of selected examples.

Oral examination
Examination questions will focus on the texts examined in the course. The student will be required to recognize the texts covered and place them in the appropriate historical context, using the correct technical terminology.

Contents
Survival, transmission and reception of ancient epigraphies, palaeographical features. Categories: holy, honorific, burial, related to public buildings, juridical ones and instrumentum inscriptum. The roman onomastic. Study of selected examples. An autoptical survey of University and Civic Museums Pavia's epigraphical collections will take place at the end of the course.
