The course aims to provide the necessary knowledge for the study of Romance languages and literatures of the Middle Ages, with particular attention to literary production in French and its manuscript tradition. At the end of the course, the student will know the basic concepts of historical Romance grammar (with particular reference to the French area), the main genres and texts peculiar to early Romance literature, and the fundamentals of textual criticism applied to Romance texts.
Course Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of Latin is desirable, but not essential.

Lectures providing an overview and in-depth exploration of linguistic, textual, and cultural issues.
Assessment Methods
Oral Examination. The student will have to demonstrate that he/she has acquired the basic linguistic, philological and literary knowledge necessary to understand the texts discussed in the classroom.

Contents
The course will be divided into two parts. In the first part, it will be illustrated the main linguistic phenomena that characterized the transition from Latin to the various Romance languages, with particular attention to the French language, as well as some fundamental concepts of textual criticism applied to Romance texts. The second part will be dedicated to the linguistic, philological and literary commentary of some medieval French lyrics.

TEACHING METHODS
For all students, teaching will be in class only.
