Syllabus
Course Objectives
The course provides tools for historical, aesthetic and theoretical investigation of the cinematographic language in its development from its origins to the present, and in its worldwide extension.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- know the main stages of development of the history of cinema, through its most important authors and works (knowledge and understanding);
- recognize elements of cinematographic language through the vision of films (knowledge and applied understanding);
- know how to evaluate individual films, authors and movements (independent judgment) from a historical, aesthetic and theoretical point of view;
- using a correct terminology to expose problems of film history and cinematographic language (communication skills);
- addressing contemporary film texts with adequate interpretative tools (ability to learn).
At the end of the course students will be able to:

Course Prerequisites
General knowledge of the main historical and artistic events of the '900; basic language skills, useful for understanding complex texts..
Teaching Methods
The course is articulated as follows: 30 hours of lectures; 12-15 hours of exercises, during which significant films from different historical periods will be analyzed in depth. Classroom lectures will be integrated with screenings of sequences and multimedia teaching. Handouts will also be provided on kiro.
Assessment Methods
Oral Examination.
Assessment will be through an oral examination in presence to test knowledge learned and methodological tools acquired.
Questions will focus on the broad outlines of film history and methodologies of film analysis, as well as on films that have been subjected to in-depth analysis. Students will be able to correctly place the film analyzed in the film genre and historical period of reference.
The following elements will be involved in determining the final grade: mastery of the subject matter, ability to apply the knowledge acquired, and accuracy of terminology.

Outlines of film history from its origins to the present day. The course aims to provide a basic understanding of the main issues of the history of
cinema in its most significant periods (origins, classic, modern and postmodern). The course explores a range of aspects of film texts (i.e.
techniques, industry, genre, narrative, and audience) through examples from various national film industries and historical periods.
Particular attention will be paid to a group of films that are representative of different phases of the history of cinema, directed by women directors or concerning female characters and themes.
