Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide skills in history of photography and in contextualizing photographic objects; in a critique reading of images, and in the main topics of the theory of photography.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- know the main periods of development of photography, through the most important authors and works (knowledge and understanding);
- recognize the elements of the language of the images through the vision of photographs (knowledge and applied understanding);
- know how to evaluate individual shots, authors and movements (independent judgment) from a historical, aesthetic and theoretical point of view;
- using a correct terminology to expose problems of history of photography and photographic language (communication skills);
- address the images of contemporaneity with adequate interpretative tools (ability to learn).

Course Prerequisites

General knowledge of the main historical and artistic events of the '900; basic language skills, useful for understanding complex texts.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with presentation of multimedia material and image analysis. The course consists of 36 hours of lessons.

Assessment Methods

The assessment will be done in presence through an oral test. The test aims to verify the knowledge achieved and the ability to place historically authors and photographic images within the genre of reference.
The oral exam will relate to the main authors and genres of the history of photography, as well as the topics explained during the lessons.
The following items will be taken in count in order to determine the final mark: the mastery of the subjects and the amount of references, the ability to apply the acquired knowledge, terminological precision.

Contents

The course will explore the history of photography from its origins to the present days, through major authors and movements that have marked the development of the medium. Photography will be investigated as a social and cultural practice, through particularly meaningful images. Furthermore the course will reconstruct the main issues of the theoretical debate on photography. Particular attention will be paid to travel photography, a genre capable of revealing the view of the «elsewhere» and the different configurations of the landscape that change over time.
