This course aims to provide basic knowledge of written and spoken Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), introducing the alphabet and writing system, principles of grammar and syntax as well as simple set texts and basic conversation skills. At the end of the course, the students will be able to read, analyse and produce short descriptive texts about Arab countries and cities. At an oral level, they will be able to present themselves and their family, talk about their daily life and describe their country.

No previous knowledge of Arabic is required
Teaching Methods
Lectures, group activities. With regard to inclusive teaching methods, students who have been certified to be in the conditions required by the University regulations (https://portale.unipv.it/it/didattica/servizi-lo-studente/modalita-didattiche-inclusive) will be given guidance on preparing for the exam independently as well as availability for dedicated receptions.
Assessment Methods
The exam consists of written and oral tests. The written exam will consist in a short written comprehension and in grammar exercises. The oral exam will consist in reading comprehension and a conversation with the mother tongue teacher, as well as a question about the text to be read (see Bibliography.

Contents
In the first module, students will learn the writing, the phonology and the reading of the Arabic alphabet, along with the basic rules of Arabic grammar and morphology (roots and patterns) and the essential vocabulary to perform elementary conversations, in addition to the geographic and political terminology.
