Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to introduce the knowledge of the history of contemporary art, from Romanticism to the most recent experiences, with a focus on the relationship of artistic languages and art criticism with contemporary historical, social and cultural changes and the art system. Through the training course, students will acquire the basic methodological and critical tools for a correct approach to the works in question and will be able to improve their communication skills thanks to an in-depth seminar led by the lecturer. Direct involvement in events dedicated to contemporary art - starting with Cremona Contemporanea | Art Week, an event that brings contemporary art into dialogue with the city's historical and artistic heritage - will be a further opportunity to put the knowledge acquired during the course into practice.

Course Prerequisites

The course of History of Contemporary Art presupposes the knowledge of contemporary historical and cultural events in their general lines, normally acquired in the educational path of upper secondary school.

Teaching Methods

The course makes use of lectures and in-depth seminars. Online multimedia resources and PowerPoint presentations projected on the screen are used to carry out the lectures and then made available to students in the teaching section on the KIRO platform. Some topics are deepened through reading, commenting and analysis of critical and programmatic texts. During the in-depth seminars, students are guided in the study of a theme or an artist and in the presentation of their research. The training activities can be supplemented by visits to exhibitions, museums, archives or artists' studios. A further opportunity may be the direct involvement of the student in events dedicated to contemporary art organised in the city of Cremona.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an individual oral interview that focuses on the topics covered in class and is aimed at ascertaining the knowledge acquired, including the ability to recognize, analyze and contextualize appropriately authors and works examined during the course, as well as to know how to give a critical reading. The test covers at least four distinct topics. The final evaluation is based on the degree of understanding and deepening of the topics presented and on the student's ability to integrate the knowledge acquired during the course.

Texts

- ANTONELLO NEGRI, L’arte in mostra. Una storia delle esposizioni, Bruno Mondadori, Milano 2011.
- A book of your choice (two for students who don't attend classes) from a list that will be provided at the beginning of the course or a written study on a topic to be agreed with the teacher.
All students will have to demonstrate a good knowledge of the main authors and developments of artistic production from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day.
The study of a high school art history textbook is recommended (see Kiro Platform for more precise directions).

Contents

Art on display between the nineteenth and the twentieth century The course is introduced by some methodological, historiographical and critical reflections useful for the study of contemporary art, for the reading of the work and for a first approach to the art system. Below is an analysis of the main exhibitions that have marked the contemporary art system, between Europe and the United States, from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the Sixties of the twentieth century. From the Salon to Courbet's Pavillon du réalisme, from the Dada Messe of 1920 to the gallery of Peggy Guggenheim in New York, from Documenta Kassel of 1955 to the Venice Biennale of 1964. The most significant cultural and expressive dynamics that were intertwined in the art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries will be reconstructed, identifying at the same time the main themes of the critical and historical-artistic debate.
