The aim of the course is to provide students with basic theoretical and methodological tools for the description and interpretation of linguistic data and phenomena that they will encounter during their studies and in their future professional lives. More specifically, the course aims at the acquisition of the fundamental notions of the discipline, such as language, langue, and the linguistic sign, as well as the conceptual and terminological apparatus necessary to describe and study language at different levels of analysis: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicon, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics.
Teaching Methods
The course is organized in lectures, delivered with the aid of PowerPoint presentations.
Assessment Methods
Written exam with multiple-choice questions, exercises related to the topics covered in class, and open-ended questions.
