Syllabus

Course Objectives

Knowledge of the fundamental aspects and protagonists of Italian and European art from the Renaissance to the eighteenth century. Ability to correctly interpret works of art, in their stylistic and iconographic components and in their relations with the historical-cultural context.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the historical and cultural events in Italy and Europe between 15th and 18th centuries.

Teaching Methods

The course includes lectures, focusing in particular on the analysis of the images of works of art. Part of the lectures will be dedicated to connoisseurship exercises, aimed at becoming familiar with the stylistic analysis of the works. Visits to current exhibitions will be organized.Students who are authorized to benefit from inclusive/innovative teaching must contact the teacher to arrange specific meetings dedicated to them.

Assessment Methods

Oral examination. Knowledge of the topics covered during the course and the ability to recognize and comment on the images of the works of art analyzed will be verified. Non-attending students must present themselves with the textbook they have chosen and must be able to comment on the published images relating to the topics to be prepared. For those who wish, there will be a written exam, replacing the oral one, in the weeks following the end of the course.

Students will have to deepen the topics covered in class by reading at least one of these books: - M. BAXANDALL, Pittura ed esperienze sociali nell’Italia del Quattrocento (1972), ed.it. Torino, Einaudi, 1978. - F. HASKELL, Mecenati e pittori. L’arte e la società italiana in età barocca (1963), ed.it. Torino, Allemandi, 2000, cap. I-V, pp.31-162. - E. PANOFSKY, Studi di iconologia. I temi umanistici nell’arte del Rinascimento (1962), ed.it. Torino, Einaudi, 1999, cap. V-VI pp.184-319. - A. PINELLI. La bella Maniera. Artisti del Cinquecento tra regola e licenza, Torino, Einaudi, 2003, pp. 1-116.The out-of-commerce books are available on KIRO. Non-attending students will have to demonstrate knowledge of the events and key protagonists of Italian art from the early fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The topics to be prepared and the recommended textbooks are listed in a specific document available on KIRO. Even non-attending students are required to know one of the in-depth books listed above.

Contents

Aspects and protagonists of Italian art from the Renaissance to the eighteenth century. The course will analyze some crucial steps in the development of Italian figurative culture, from the first Renaissance experiences of the early fifteenth century to the affirmation of the Baroque taste and to the new experiences of the eighteenth century.
