Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides students with a broad introduction to film language
and to film analysis. The course also acquaints the main issues and the
different approaches to film analysis and theory. It offers theoretical and analytical skills to deal with audio-visual texts.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- know the main theories of cinema (knowledge and understanding);
- recognize the elements of the cinematographic language through the vision of films (knowledge and applied understanding);
- know how to analyze a film according to a set of theories and analysis methodologies (autonomy of judgment);
- exhibit language and cinema theory problems (communication skills) using correct terminology;
- deal with film with adequate interpretative tools (theoretical and analytical) (ability to learn).

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the main aspects of audiovisual language; basic language skills, useful for understanding complex texts.

Teaching Methods

The course is articulated as follows: 30 hours of lectures; 12-15 hours of exercises, during which significant films will be analyzed in depth. Classroom lectures will be integrated with screenings of sequences and multimedia teaching. Handouts will also be provided on kiro.

Assessment Methods

Students will prepare an essay of film analysis (previously agreed with the teacher), according to Deleuze's theory, to be delivered 15 days before the exam. The exam consists in the discussion of the paper submitted and in an interview to verify understanding and acquisition of the concepts proposed. The methodology of the analysis will be explained during lessons. The essay will contribute to the overall rating of 70%. The questions during the oral examination will cover the assigned bibliography: the mastery and completeness of the references, the terminology accuracy, and the ability to create links between the texts will be evaluated.

- DEBORAH CARTMELL, ASHLEY D. POLASEK (eds), A Companion to the Biopic, Wiley Blackwell, Hoboken, 2020

- Course materials that will be made available on the teacher's website.
- It is furthermore required the integral vision and analysis of a list of films that will be provided during the course and published on the web page.

Contents

The course examines the basic elements of the cinematographic and audiovisual language, introducing students to the analysis, in particular through examples from significant filmic texts. In this perspective it also operates a survey of the main hubs of film theory and of the models of interpretation of films. Particular attention will be paid on biographical films, a genre spanning the history of international cinema that portrays the lives of real or fictional characters using cinematic language. Through an overview of the genres with which biopics hybridize, such as musicals, political films, and historical films, the processes of representation governing the "filmed biography" of protagonists, especially in expressive and artistic fields, will be investigated, as will the theoretical debate accompanying the genre's evolution.
