- Lectures - Common reading of sources presented in Powerpoint or scans (available on the platform KIRO)
Assessment Methods
Written test. The test is divided in five questions: two short ones (on the chronological relationship between events or persons; definitions of notions), a discussion of two important medieval problems, events or phenomena and, finally, a comment on a medieval source (written or figurative) or on a map.

Contents
Introduction to Medieval History: The course will discuss important topics and problems of medieval European history, by studying written and iconographic sources from the 5th to the 15th century. It is propaedeutic to the module B. Its purpose is to give the students an understanding of the tools required for a critical reading of the Middle Ages: general contexts, languages, tendencies of historiography, and criticism of sources. Since the sources used in the course are often in Latin a basic knowledge of Latin is required.
